Molybdenum Makes the Difference
The key difference between 304 and 316 is molybdenum. 304 does not contain it. 316 does. The molybdenum creates a protective film on the surface. This film resists pitting and crevice corrosion. This is important in areas with chloride exposure. Sea water has high chloride content. Road salt has high chloride content. 316 stainless steel stands up to these attacks. The tray passes 600 hours or more of salt spray testing. It outlasts 304 in the same environment.
